RISON – The Woodlawn Bears gained another Top 25 national high school baseball ranking last week when CBS MaxPreps Media Composite Rankings announced that the Bears are in their final composite poll for the 2017 season.
The MaxPreps Composite poll is based on the rankings of seven different high school basebaseball media polls: MaxPreps Xcellent 25, MaxPreps Computer, USA Today Expert, USA Today Computer, Baseball America, Perfect Game, and Collegiate Baseball.
Woodlawn was ranked among the Top 5 in two of those polls, coming at no. 4 in the Baseball America poll and no. 5 in the USA Today Expert Poll. The Bears were not ranked among the Top 25 in the other polls.
Kevin Askeland of MaxPreps.com said that Archbishop McCarthy, Helena, Eastlake (Chula Vista, Calif.) and La Cueva (Albuquerque) were the only teams ranked by all seven rankings services.
Askeland added that a total of 62 teams were ranked by at least one poll. Of those, he said 23 were ranked by only one service.
Woodlawn Coach Tommy Richardson said in a previous interview that the Bears best national ranking before this was when it finished the season ranked in the 60’s by one poll.
Woodlawn went 34-1 this year to win the Class 1A State Championship. It was the Bears second consecutive state crown after winning the Class 2A title in 2016.
