DONALDSON – Austin Weatherford and Joseph Jones combined for 61 points and the Woodlawn Bears made 19 3-pointers as they bombed the Ouachita Warriors, 97-67, Saturday night to win the Herb Russell Holiday Hoops Classic Championship at Ouachita High School.
Woodlawn Coach Logan Adair admitted that going in that he didn’t like his Bears’ chances of pulling off a win in the championship game on Ouachita’s home court, especially after considering how the Class 1A Warriors knocked off Class 3A Haskell Harmony Grove and Glen Rose to get there.
But then again, Adair said he wasn’t expecting the kind of shooting performance his Bears would turn in that night as well. “We shot the ball extremely well,” he said.
A sign of things to come came at the close of the first quarter when Joseph Jones banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Bears a 17-16 lead. Woodlawn responded with 33 points in the second quarter, racing out to a 50-34 advantage by halftime.
The Bears knocked down 10 treys in the first half with Jones and Weatherford finishing with three apiece while Nick Willis had two and Cole Reynolds and Cole Tollison had one apiece.
“We average about 12 3-pointers a game, so I thought we would cool off some in the second half,” Adair said. “I told our guys that we probably wouldn’t make as many in the second half so start looking more inside for baskets.”
