Woodlawn Hires Means As New Football Coach

WOODLAWN - Doug Means, a veteran coach who was as an assistant coach/special teams coordinator at Class 5A Magnolia this past season, has been hired as the new football coach at Woodlawn High School.The hire became official after the Woodlawn School Board approved it in a special-called meeting Tuesday night.Woodlawn High School principal T.J. Hill, who was part of the search team, said Means has been coaching for 32 years. A native of Fayetteville, he graduated of Fayetteville High School before earning his degree from the University of Arkansas. After college, he began his high school coaching career in Georgia before moving to Florida. After returning to Arkansas, Hill said Means eventually became head coach at Norphlet High School before the football program was shut down after Norphlet consolidated with Smackover. He also spent time as head coach at Hampton.Before going to Magnolia, Means was the defensive coordinator at Hope High School for former Head Coach Jay Turley. During Turley’s tenure, Hope produced standout defensive lineman McTelvin “Sosa” Agim, who played for the University of Arkansas before going to the NFL.Woodlawn began its search for a new football coach after previous head coach Zach Meyer was approved as the new Woodlawn Elementary principal during the school board’s March meeting.This is the second time that Woodlawn has approved a new football since Meyer’s departure. The school board approved hiring of White Hall assistant football coach Hunter Davis as the new head football coach during its April meeting.
