County’s Cherry Cemetery Among Register Nominees

LITTLE ROCK - The Arkansas State Review Board will consider the nominations for several Arkansas properties, including one from Cleveland County, to the National Register of Historic Places at its next meeting on Aug. 7.The Cherry Cemetery outside of Rison on Mt. Elba Road is being considered for the National Register. The cemeber reflects the settlement history of the former Mt. Elba community in central Cleveland County.In addition, the State Review Board will also consider a nomination for the Old Kingsland Post Office in Cleveland County to the Arkansas Register. The former post office was the backdrop for an iconic photo made of country music stars Johnny Cash and Johnny Horton during a visit to Kingsland in the late 1950’s.Ralph Wilcox, national register and survey coordinator and deputy state historic preservation officer for the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program AHPP), said the National Register for Historic Places is administered through the AHPP in Arkansas....
