Posey Faces Capital Murder Charges from Mass Shooting at Fordyce Store
RISON - Travis Eugene "Joey" Posey, 44, of New Edinburg, is facing four counts of capital murder after four people died and 10 others were injured in a mass shooting last Friday at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce. Posey is being held without bond in the Ouachita County jail at Camden.Posey pleaded not guilty in his first court appearance Tuesday, June 25, at the Ouachita County Detention Facility in Camden, where he is being held without bond. Judge Ryan Phillips presided over the hearing for probable cause, which was not an arraignment nor a trial.Col. Mike Hagar, director of the Arkansas State Police, said Posey was taken into custody after being wounded in a gunfight with law enforcement officers in the parking lot outside the store located 920 West 4th Street in Fordyce.Posey was originally charged with three counts of capital murder on Friday, but a fourth was added after another shooting victim died Saturday from her injuries. He is also facing multiple counts of attempted capital murder.State Police reported Sunday that a total of 15 people were injured from gunfire, 12 who were civilians, two who were police officers and the suspect.In addition to the suspect, two of the fatalities had ties to Cleveland County: Callie Weems, 23, and Roy Sturgis, 50, were both from the Kingsland area.Shirley Taylor, 62, of Fordyce, died during the initial shooting on Friday while Ellen Shrum, 81, of Fordyce, died Saturday from her gunshot wounds.Five female and three male civilians, ranging in age from 20 to 65, survived injuries sustained in the shooting, Hagar said. There were social media accounts that at least one of those victims was from Kingsland.Arkansas State Police's Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the shooting.Hagar said the shooting began at approximately 11:38 a.m. Friday, June 21.
