More Illegal Tire Dumps Discovered On Dunkeffie Road

RISON - More tires were dumped illegally along a county road in northern Cleveland County over the weekend, but County Judge Jimmy Cummings said he believes they could be close to finding the person(s) responsible for what he estimated to be nearly 400 tires found along the road.Last week, Cummings reported about 200 used tires were found dumped along the side of Dunkeffee Road that stretches from Hwy. 133 in the Bowman township to Hwy. 79 in southern Jefferson County. The first round of tires were found in two separate piles totaling about 200 tires. This week, Cummings said he received a call notifying him that a new pile of tires had been discovered at the power lines (continued from page 1) along the unpaved portion of Dunkeffie Road west of the railroad tracks in the northern part of the county. Based on information from the call, Cummings said the tires were dumped between 1 and 5 p.m. Sunday, May 19.Cummings said he toured the area again on Monday and found two more piles of tires, one along the side of Dunkeffie Road west of the power line and another at a gate blocking Conner Road in Jefferson County.Cummings estimated an additional 200 tires had been dump over this past weekend bringing the overall total to about 400.During his inspection on Monday, Cummings said they were able to recover some tire tracks at one of the dump sites. He said they belief the culprit is using a trailer to haul the tires in.Nearly all the illegallydumped tires have been dumped from passenger cars and light trucks, which Cummings said leads him to believe they are coming from a tire service business. Some of the tires that were dumped had markings on them to indicate where a hole was located.Anyone convicted of commercial littering, by state law, is subject to a fine of anywhere from $100 to $1,000 and community service.
