WOODLAWN - The Woodlawn School Board approved giving all staff a one-time payment of $500 that will be included in their December paychecks.In addition, the school board also approved during its regular monthly meeting last the purchase of five culverts that will be used to make drainage improvements to the utility driveway that parents use to drop off and pick up students at the elementary school.The Woodlawn School Board held is regular monthly meeting last Tuesday, Nov. 12, since the regular meeting on Monday, Nov. 11, was the Veterans Day holiday.Woodlawn has traditionally given some kind of a one-time payment to staff around the holidays. The amount is often dictated by what money is available in the district’s general fund. The amount given this year was $500.Utility Drive ImprovementsThe board accepted a bid of $4,122.56 from A-1 Culvert Supply for five 24-inch culverts. Three of those will be 30 feet long while the other two will be 20 feet long, Hancock said.Woodlawn Superintendent Dr. Kevin Hancock said the culverts are part of a plan to improve drainage along the gravel road that enters campus along Hwy. 63 north of the football before curving around the baseball and softball fields to join Smith Road, a paved road that leads to the elementary.Hancock said the road is in need of repairs, and some areas are prone to flooding.Earlier this year, Woodlawn learned it was awarded a mitigation grant of $28,000 to make improvements to the road. Hancock explained the grant is a cost-share award with the school district responsible for providing about $8,000 for the project through in-kind expenses.Improvements for the road, including the installation of the culverts, will be carried out in phases so as to not disrupt traffic for those dropping off and picking up students, Hancock said.He said the Cleveland County Road Department will be helping with the improvements to the ...
