Wiscaver Selected To Replace Crosby as Mayor of Kingsland

KINGSLAND - Former Kingsland City Council member Karen Wiscaver was selected by her peers last Thursday to replace Sharon Crosby as the new mayor of Kingsland. Crosby officially resigned the position on Dec. 31.Meanwhile, the city council also approved the appointment of Nadriona Russell as the new recorder/treasurer for the City of Kingsland, a position that has been vacant since the resignation of former Recorder/Treasurer Tleatha “Tootie” Spencer in October 2022. Russell’s appointment is through Dec. 31, 2026.Both appointments came during the Kingsland City Council’s regular monthly meeting held last Thursday night at Kingsland City Hall.With no mayor in place at the start of the meeting, councilman Lee Penister presided over the meeting with the first order of business being the appointment of a new recorder/treasurer.  City Attorney Thomas Burns explained that the city is required to have a recorder/treasurer since the position is responsible for presiding over council meetings during the absence of the mayor.After Russell’s appointment was approved by a 4-0 vote of the city council, she was immediately sworn in by Cleveland County Judge Jimmy Cummings, who was the at the meeting. Russell then presided over the meeting with her first order of business being appointing a new mayor. Sandra Laws made the motion to appoint Wiscaver as mayor and the council approved her nomination by a 3-0 vote.Wiscaver will complete the remaining two years on Crosby’s term, which will expire on Dec. 31, 2026. Crosby had previously selected Wiscaver to serve as vice mayor to handle city business during her absence.With Wiscaver being appointed mayor, that leaves a vacancy for her Ward 2, Position 1 seat on the four-member city council.
