Three-Way Race, Millage On May 13 Ballot; WSB Approves 5% Raise for Classified
WOODLAWN - The Woodlawn School District will have three polling sites open when voters got to the polls May 13 to decide a three-way race for the Woodlawn School Board as well as a 2-mill tax increase to help fund new construction of the career and technical center as well as expanding the school cafeteria.The Woodlawn School Board made the decision to open three polling sites for the election during Monday night's regular monthly meeting.Also, the board approved giving all classified staff a 5 percent pay increase starting with the 2025-26 school year on July 1.Superintendent Kevin Hancock recommended that the dis-trict open three polling sites for the upcoming school election due to having a three-way school board race and the millage request. Larry Reynolds' seat on the five-member school board is up for re-election this year. Reynolds did file to run again while Trevaughn Moore and David White filed to run as well.Woodlawn elects its board members at-large, which means every registered voter within the boundaries of the school district can vote in the school board race.The board accepted Hancock's recommendation to open polls on election day at Pleasant Ridge Missionary Baptist Church near the Randall com-munity, Center Missionary Baptist Church at the Rowell community, and Union United Methodist Church at the Rye community.Hancock pointed out that the Woodlawn Community Center is also usually an option, but he was informed by the Cleveland County Election Commission that it could not be used in this election since Reynolds has an affiliation with the center as a board member.There was some discussion about the cost of the election, which Hancock said would be about $10,000 according to the election commission.Hancock explained that the cost is associated with paying the poll workers at each site, programming the electronic voting machines, and renting the polling site.
