RISON - Rison High School is seeking a new boys basketball coach after the Cleveland County School Board accepted the resignation of Coach Kyle Thaxton during its meeting Monday night.Thaxton recently completed his first year as the head basketball coach, leading the Wildcats to an 8-12 overall record and qualifying for the regional tournament. Superintendent Davy King said Thaxton will remain on staff as an assistant football coach, assistant baseball coach and history teacher.King said the district posted the opening for the boys basketball coaching job on Tuesday. He did not have a definitive timeline as to when a new coach would be hired. Thaxton's resignation was one of several personnel decisions acted on by the school board Monday night. In addition, the board: Accepted the resignations/ retirements of Rison Elementary special education teacher Brenda Brown and teacher Paula Puckett. Accepted the resignation of Rison Elementary teacher Jenny Gross effective Feb. 27. Accepted the resignations of Angel Jacobs as assistant Student Council sponsor; Kim King as yearbook adviser; Cheryl Patrick as elementary and junior high Quiz Bowl coach; and Chris Power for Saturday detention. All resignations are effective at the end of their respective contracts on June 30, and will remain in their other roles in the district. Approved hiring Katelyn Hargrave as an infant/toddler teacher for the Head Start Center at Woodlawn; and Melanie Vereen as the high school family and consumer science teacher. Approved King's recommendation to extend 2025-26 school year contracts as listed on the personnel flow charge "with the understanding that contracts supported by federal funds that may be reduced or discontinued to the school district will be considered null."
