Bears Edge DeWitt; Whip Hampton 27-0

DEWITT - Ty Motes and Tate Hall held the DeWitt Dragons to three hits as the Woodlawn Bears squeezed out a 3-1 non-conference win Tuesday afternoon at DeWitt.Woodlawn improved to 14-4 overall with the victory and are 3-0 in 8-2A conference play.DeWitt scored its lone run in the bottom of the first off back-to-back singles and an error with two out.Woodlawn quickly answered in the top of the second when Cash Hargis and Tyner Burris singled to lead off the inning. A double-play advanced Hargis to third, and he then scored on a passed ball before a strikeout ended the frame.The Bears scored what would end up being the winning runs in third.Mason Edmonds led off the frame with a hit, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and then scored on an error off Peyton Wells’ grounder. Wells then stole second and then moved to third after tagging up on Garrett Weatherford’s fly ball. Hall then grounded out to short allowing Wells to score to make it 3-1.The Dragons struggled to get base runners on after the Bears went in front. DeWitt had just one runner reach over the next four innings, and that came on an one-out walk in the third. That runner was eventually picked off.However, the Dragons did put together a threat in the bottom of the seventh when they loaded the bases with a lead-off single, a one-out walk, and a hit batter with two out. Hall, who came on in relief of Motes to start the sixth, shut the door by striking out the final batter on three pitches.Woodlawn out-hit DeWitt 7-3 in the game. Hargis had two hits while Wells, Hall, Burris, Edmonds and Logan Clark accounted for the others.Motes got the win after giving up two hits and one walk over five innings. He had three strikeouts.
