WOODLAWN - Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer said he intended to “clean up” some of the mistakes his Bears made after dropping a 38-28 decision to top-ranked Mountain Pine last Friday night at home, and that clean up began Monday afternoon.
Meyer said he and his staff spent about two and a half hours Monday going over film of that game that saw the Bears put the ball on the ground five times and made some mistakes on defense that led to some big plays by the explosive Red Devils.
“We went over every play,” Meyer said of the film session. “They (the players) were very responsive - in a positive way.”
Woodlawn will be looking to bounce back from its first loss the season when the Bears travel to Marvell to take on the Mus‐tangs in a South Conference game. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. And there wil be no junior high game since Marvell is not fielding a junior high team this year.
Marvell enters the game with a 2-4 record overall and a 1-3 mark in South Conference play. The Mustangs are coming off a 44-6 rout of Dermott last week at home.
Meyer said he is not taking anything for granted, and warned his team Monday that this could easily be a trap game for his Bears, much like Spring Hill found out in a 14-6 loss at Strong last week.
Marvell’s two wins this season came in a 50-28 win over Au‐gusta back on Sept. 9 and last week’s victory over the Rams. The Mustangs’ four losses have were to teams currently ranked among the best in Class 2A eight-man football: Brinkley, Mountain Pine, Spring Hill and Strong.
Meyer said the ‘Stangs are very athletic overall, and have big running backs with excellent speed that is capable of breaking a big play at any time. “They have three or four guys that can outrun anybody on our team,” he said.
Woodlawn is not in a position to have a let down this Friday if it intends to secure a home game for the first round of the play‐offs.
