RISON - The Cleveland County Solid Waste Transfer Station on Hwy. 79 at Rison is now open six days a week, Monday through Saturday.
The Cleveland County Quorum Court included additional money in the 2023 budget to fund a second person for the transfer station which allows it to be open an extra day.
Previously, with just one person overseeing the transfer station, the hours of operation had to be built around that person's 40-hour work week. The transfer station was previously open from Tuesday through Saturday.
With a second staff person now assigned to the station, it is now open from Monday through Saturday. There is no fee for dumping trash at the transfer station.
Under the new schedule, there will be varying hours of daily operation at the transfer station: Monday: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday: 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Wednesday: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Thursday and Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
County Judge Jimmy Cummings said he wanted to extend the hours on some days to make it possible for people to use the transfer station after they got off work.
Anyone using the transfer station needs to check with the attendant before dumping.
In addition to accepting household waste, the transfer station can also accept other items as well. The county has several recycling areas set up at the transfer station to accept scrap aluminum, metal, cardboard, shredded paper, newspapers and magazines. There is also an area to accept "e-waste," which is electronic waste that includes televisions, computers, printers, copiers and small appliances like microwaves or blenders.
