RISON - Sheriff Jack Rodgers informed the Cleveland County Quorum Court Monday night that a crew fromDetention Service, LLC of San Antonio, Texas, recently visited the county jail in anticipation of beginning the renovations there.
Meanwhile, County Judge Jimmy Cummings received permission from the quorum court to pursue a contractor to help take down the old Cleveland County Nursing Home, and the quorum court also voted to disband the county parks administration board since it was no longer being used.
Those matters and more were addressed during the Cleveland County Quorum Court's regular monthly meeting Monday night at the Hall-MorganVeterans Building.
Rodgers gave the quorum court an update on the jail renovations toward the end of the meeting. In September, the court voted to spend nearly $300,000 to renovate the county jail to put it compliance with state regulations. The main problems with the jail, according to the sheriff, were faulty doors and locks as well as issues with the stainless steel toilets and sinks, and the electrical system. Detention Services submitted two separate bids to address those issues: one for $251,800 to replace 10 jail doors and locks, and a second bid of $40,650 to replace the toilets and sinks, rewire the lighting inside the jail, and replace the light covers.
In total, the two bids came to $292,450. However, Sheriff Rodgers told the court in September that he will apply $45,782 left over from the $50,000 the county had previously approved to pay Detention Services for whatever repairs it could make during it initial visit in July. Using that money toward the overall cost left the county with a balance of $246,668 for project.
During Monday night's meeting, Rodgers said they is considering making repairs to two of the steel doors rather than replacing them. If they are able to do that, he said it would reduce the price by about $40,000.
