Bears' Rally Comes Up Short Against Hamburg, 71-65

WOODLAWN - Woodlawn's furious fourth-quarter comeback came up short last Thursday as the Class 4A Hamburg Lions held on to hand the Bears their first loss of the season, 71-65, inside the Woodlawn Gym. Hamburg appeared to have the game in hand when the Lions outscored the Bears 22-8 in the second quarter to take a 38-24 lead at then half and then extend it to a 57-38 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. But Woodlawn's offense came to life in the final period as Gar- rett Weatherford and Ryan Rutledge both hit two 3-pointers apiece to spark a 27-14 run by the Bears in the fourth quarter. Woodlawn Coach Logan Adair said the Bears had a chance to cut it four with about a minute left in the game but could not complete the alley oop to do it. He said Landon Ashcraft came up with a big steal late in the game to help Woodlawn stay within striking distance. "We let them get off to too good of a start," Adair said, noting that Hamburg's Zion Stewart had more than half of his gamehigh 35 points over the first two quarters. The loss spoiled a stellar night for Woodlawn's Raylon Lawson, who finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds, five blocked shots and four assists. Jude Roberts followed with 22 points after hitting all six of his free throw attempts in the fourth quarter. The Bears fell to 2-1 with the loss. It was the season-opening game for the Lions.
