Familiarity With School, Vision for District Reasons Behind Selection
RISON - Davy King, currently the director of athletics, transportation and maintenance for the Cleveland County School District, has been selected as the new superintendent for the district beginning July 1.King, who has been an employed at the Rison School campus since 2001, will succeed Jerrod Williams, who completes his one-year contract with the district on June 30.The Cleveland County School Board called a special meeting last Thursday night to vote on the new superintendent as well as conduct an expulsion hearing.After handling the expulsion hearing, the school board went into executive session for a few minutes before coming back to nominate King for superintendent. School board member Helen Browning's motion to hire King was unanimously approved with all seven board members present.Harrell Wilson, president of the Cleveland County School Board, said King's long-time association with the school, his relationship with the community and staff, and his vision for the district is what won him over during the interview process.Wilson described the overall pool of candidates considered for the superintendent's job this time around as having much more experience than the previous search after former Superin-tendent Craig Dupuy resigned in the spring of 2023. Dupuy stepped down to become an assistant superintendent in the Benton School District. The list of applicants included somecurrent superintendents as well as building administrators in larger school districts. "I don't think anyone (being considered) would have more a vested interest in the community and the school as he does," Wilson said referring to King's selection.Wilson said the he has personally received a lot of positive feedback on the selection from both the public and school staff.
