The Woodlawn School Board selected Clark Construction of Little Rock to serve as the construction manager for the district's proposed plans to build a new career education center and expand the school cafeteria, Superintendent Dr. Kevin Hancock said.Clark Construction was among three finalists that made presentations to the Woodlawn School Board during its regular monthly meeting Monday night. Nabholz Construction of Conway and Baldwin & Shell Construction of Little Rock were the other finalists. Hancock said eight firms submitted "request for quote" to oversee the projects.Hancock said the board felt Clark was the best fit for Woodlawn, considering the company has experience working in South Arkansas having been involved with recent school projects at Warren, Monticello and El Dorado.While the school board has yet to officially vote on moving forward with either construction project, Hancock explained that hiring an architect and a construction manager are the first steps in eventually getting to that decision.In September, the board voted to hire Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects of Little Rock to be the architects for the project.Hancock explained both entities needed to be in place before as the district awaits word from the state on its partnership application to help fund both projects. He said the partnership applications for both the career center and cafeteria expansion were submitted before the March 1 deadline.Under the partnership program, the state provides a certain percentage toward the construction cost for projects related to academics. The percentage the state pays is based on a district's "wealth index." For Woodlawn, the state will pay about 70 percent of the cost.Hancock said the partnership program is awarded in two phases: the first phase is to have the projects accepted into program, and the second phase is to be awarded the funding for those projects.
