Bears Blank Parkers Chapel To Decide 8-2A Championship

WOODLAWN - The Woodlawn Bears claimed the 8-2A regular season championship Tuesday with an 8-0 shutout over the Parkers Chapel Trojans in a battle of conference unbeatens at Woodlawn Field.Woodlawn will have the no. 1 seed heading into next week's 82A District Tournament at Parkers Chapel. By virtue of winning the regular season title, the Bears earned an automatic berth to the Region 4 Tournament that will be played at May 8-10 at Woodlawn.Both teams went into Tuesday's game undefeated in conference play with the regular season title on the line. The Bears finish league play 8-0 while the Trojans fell to 7-1. Woodlawn improved to 22-5 overall while Parkers Chapel fell to 16-3.Parkers Chapel stayed within striking distance for much of the game before the Bears opened it up in their final two frames.Peyton Wells led off the bottom of the first with a triple and then scored off an error on the same play, giving Woodlawn a quick 1-0 lead.The Bears did not add a run until the third when Parker Arnold walked with one out, and his courtesy runner, Tyler French, moved to third on Wells' follow-up double. Mason Edmonds' ground-out brought French home to make it 2-0.In the fourth, Weatherford drew a lead-off walk, stole second, moved to third on Hollis Holderfield's sacrifice bunt and then scored on Cash Hargis' fly to center, extending the lead to 3-0.Woodlawn gave itself some breathing room with three more runs in the fifth.Arnold and Wells both drew walks with one out before anothern ground-out from Edmonds' drove in French, who was running for Arnold. Tate Hall then doubled to score Wells, and Weatherford had a double to drive in courtesy runner Gage Boykin, making it 6-0.The Bears' final two runs came off RBI singles by Arnold and Edmonds in the sixth.Wells started on the hump for Woodlawn.
