Woodlawn Uses Explosive Start to Steamroll Marvell, 60-20

WOODLAWN - There really wasn't much Woodlawn Coach Doug Means could find wrong after his Bears made quick work of the Marvell Mustangs with a 6020 homecoming victory Friday night at the Carl Jones Sports Complex.After having a bye last week in preparation for the winless Mustangs, the Bears' offense looked about as fine-tuned as it has all season. Woodlawn racked up 354 yards of total offense over three quarters as both teams agreed to forego the fourth quarter.Woodlawn amassed 320 yards on the ground using six different runners. Griffin Manes led the way with 138 yards on nine carries and four touchdowns. He also had a 34-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Ethan Saeler, who rushed for 75 yards on five attempts with a touchdown.Means also included senior tight ends Beau Watson and Matthew Green in the mixes with some reverses. Watson had a career-best 69 yards on three carries while Green had a four-yard touchdown run. Overall, the Bears averaged 13.9 yards per carry for the game, and did not have a fumble."All we do offensively in practice is polish," Means said after the game. "We're at a point where we've seen ever front we're going to see. I don't think there's going to be anything different. So all we do in practice is polish offensively, and run through the plays.We probably run every play on my play card probably twice in practice which is probably about 65 plays in total." Woodlawn took control early with 32 points in the first quarter, 16 of which came within the first four minutes of the game.After Marvell's onside attempt to start the game failed to go 10 yards, the Bears took over at the Mustang 46. Five plays later, Manes scored from a couple of yards out and Tayte Jacks punched in the two-pointer to make it 8-0.Matthew Green then recovered an onside kick by Woodlawn, giving the Bears possession at the Marvell 43.
