Backwoods Poultry Show Saturday at Fairgrounds

RISON - Entries from as far away as Iowa are expected to be in Backwoods Poultry Show set for this Saturday at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds in Rison. The public is invited to attend and admission is free. Gates will open at 9 a.m. and concessions will be available. The poultry show features not only chickens, but ducks, geese and turkeys as well. Frankie Harper, a member of the Cleveland County Fair Board who organizes the poultry show, said he is expecting hundreds of birds to compete in the show, and there will be a heavy emphasis on the youth/junior division entries. While some of the chicken breeds that will be competing in the show are ones that people commonly see in backyard flocks like Barred Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds or Buff Orpingtons, there are also several breeds that are primarily for show birds. When the birds a judged, the American Poultry Association states that large fowl are classed according to their place of origin (American, Mediterranean, English, etc.) and bantams are grouped according to their comb type and clean or feather legged. Judges will be looking at a variety of aspects when inspecting the birds, ranging from cleanliness to weight, size and overall health and vigor of the bird. ...
