RISON - Tammy Curry, who previously operated the Cutting Edge salon at Rye, has opened Southern Roots at 100 Third Street in the downtown area of Rison.

The business is located in the same wood-sided shop where Linda Morrison had cut hair in the downtown Rison area for several years. The building has been mostly vacant since Morrison closed the business several years ago.

Curry operated the Cutting Edge at Rye for 16 years before moving to her new location in Rison. She said she selected the new name because she felt it fit the town.

Curry said she will offer haircuts for both men, women and children as well as offer hair coloring, permanents and shampoo sets. Her daughter, Jade Pniitt, will be offering haircuts as well as fashion colors and basic manicured and pedicures. The shop will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. Curry said she takes after-hour appointments Tuesday through Thursday.

Curry also announced that two tanning beds will soon be installed at Southern Roots.

The building that houses Southern Roots has a little history behind it as well.

Linda Morrison, who operated out of the same location for several years, said the natural wood siding used in constructing the building were originally from a dam in Duck Mountain, Tenn. She said Rison businessman I.E. Moore bought the logs that had been underwater for several years, and had them shipped to Rison.

Once they arrived at Rison, Morrison said the logs were cut into lumber that was used to help build the officer’s quarters at Camp Robinson near Little Rock. She said the leftovers were used in the constniction the building that served as her beauty shop.

She said Willis Findley and and Raymond Prescott were involved with converting the logs into lumber, noting that Findley hand-made the iron work that is in the building.
