Dollar General Closing Kingsland Land Sale June 7

KINGSLAND - The company overseeing the land purchase for a new Dollar General store in Kingsland has informed Kingsland Mayor Sharon Crosby that the company expects to close on the property June 7. Crosby informed the Kingsland City Council about the developments during the council's regular monthly meeting last Thursday. In a related matter, the city council did sign a petition developed by City Attorney Thomas Burns that closes "the street and alleys" that cross the property where the new store will be located. It specifically mentioned streets and alleys located within Blocks 11, 12 and 26 located south of Hwy. 79 and west of Hwy. 189. In addition to the city council members, those who own property that adjoin the area for the closures also signed the petition. Last December, the Cleveland County School Board approved selling 1.1 acres of property that was formerly part of the Kingsland School campus to Pine Belt Development, which is a group that buys land and builds the stores for Dollar General throughout the region. The land in question is located on the west side of Hwy. 189 (First Street) across from the Kingsland School campus. Charlie Montgomery of Montgomery Southern Development of Greenwood, Miss., who spearheaded the land purchase for Pine Belt, told the school board during its December 2022 meeting that the original plan was to build the store on some previously-purchased land with Hwy. 79 frontage at the southwest corner of the Hwy. 79/ Hwy. 189 intersection. However, Montgomery told the school board that the Arkansas Department of Transportation would not allow a Hwy. 79 entrance to the business at that location due the configuration of the intersection with the old Hwy. 79. On that note, he said Pine Belt needed to buy additional land along Hwy. 189 to make the store entrance there. Pine Belt paid the school district $31,500 for the land.
