RISON - Circuit Judge David W. Talley instructed Timothy Sled of Kingsland on Tuesday to be actively paying the $15,000 in fines and fees he owes after being convicted of two felony counts for shooting the Kingsland water tank last year.
Judge Talley did not order Sled to serve any jail time during Tuesday's sentencing hearing.
A Cleveland County circuit court jury found Sled, 39, guilty of one count of criminal mischief (Class D felony) and impairing the operation of a vital public utility (Class C felony) during a trail held March 28.
Sled was fined $5,000 for each felony conviction and also ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution to the City of Kingsland for the damages to the water tank. He is also responsible for paying court costs.
He appeared before Judge Talley on Tuesday, April 11, for sentencing. Judge Talley ordered Sled to return to court on July 11 for review and check on the status of his payments.
Sled was arrested May 16, 2022, for shooting a hole into a silhouette of Johnny Cash on the side of the Kingsland water tank. The resulting leak made it look as though the American music icon was urinating. The incident brought national and even worldwide attention to Kingsland.
Thirteenth Judicial District Prosecutor Jeffery Rodgers said in a recent interview that Sled was offered a plea agreement by Cleveland County Deputy Prosecutor Eric Marks before his March 28 trial. He said that deal was for three years probation and for Sled to pay court costs and restitution to the City of Kingsland. He said Sled refused the plea and preferred to go to trial instead.
Sled and some of his supporters posted on social media after his conviction last month that they feared he may have to serve jail time from the conviction. A Class C felony carries a penalty of three to 10 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000. A Class D felony carries a penalty of zero to six years in prison and a fine not...
