KINGSLAND - The Kingsland City Council took what should be the final step in allowing the land sale for a new Dollar General store to go forward after approving an ordinance closing certain alleys and streets following a public hearing Tuesday night at Kingsland City Hall.
Mayor Sharon Crosby said no one showed up to speak on the proposed closures thereby allowing the city council to formally approve an ordinance closing those alleys and streets. Those alleys and streets included in the closure were platted for the location of the new store at the southwest corner of Hwy. 79 and Hwy. 189 (First Street) in Kingsland. The 1.1acre site is owned by the Cleveland County School District.
State law requires a city to hold a public hearing when a city decides to close a street or alley.
Charlie Montgomery of Montgomery Southern Development of Greenwood, Miss., which buys the land for Dollar General stores, told the city council during a special meeting on June 27 that a city plat made decades ago included some streets and alleys that would cross the store site but the city never developed them.
Montgomery said he expects to be able to close the property sale sometime between July 15 and July 20. While he is not directly affiliated with building the stores, Montgomery said constrtuction usually begins within a week to one month after the property sale is closed.
