Kingsland Finances Finish Year Stronger

KINGSLAND - Both the general fund and street fund finished the year with better year-end balances than expected, Kingsland business office manager Wendy James informed the Kingsland City Council on Dec. 18.James told the city council during its regular monthly meeting that the general fund, which covers all city expenses other than streets, finished about $20,000 over projections while the street fund finished about $15,000 above expectations.She both accounts finished within budget, which some of the city councils responded that was the first time they could recall that happening since they had been on the city council.James attributed the good financial news to keeping an eye on expenses rather than seeing an influx of more revenue. In an interview after the meeting, she said the City of Kingsland has not yet started receiving sales tax revenue from the Dollar General. The city council approved Dollar General's voluntary annexation into the city on Oct. 23 with a 30-day waiting period after that before the sales tax will be collected on taxable purchases. Once the sales tax is collected, there is usually about a two month period for the sales tax money to be turned in to the state and then distributed back to the city.James’ announcement came as the city council approved the city’s 2026 budget ordinance. She said the budget projections were based on this year’s numbers.On a related noted, the city council also approved its annual ordinance to levy the existing 5mill tax on real and personal property for residents within the Kingsland city limits.Mayor Wiscaver said the ordinance was supposed to have been approved during the November meeting so it could be included with the other taxing entities within the county for the Cleveland County Quroum Court’s annual tax levy for the entire county.
