KINGSLAND - Organizers of the Kingsland All-School Reunion are calling the first gathering in two years a success as about 100 people gathered at the Kingsland School auditorium to visit and reminisce this past Saturday.
The last reunion was held in February 2020, just before the outbreak of the COVID pandemic. The 2021 and 2022 were both canceled due to pandemic.
Kingsland Mayor Sharon Crosby, who along with the Kickstart Kingsland community development group helped organized the event, said people from as far back as the Class of 1954 were in attendance Saturday. She said there were some out-of-state guests that made it as well.
Organizers estimated about 200 attended the last reunion held in February 2020. While attendance was about half to that this year, Crosby pointed out that there were a lot of other things happening this past Sastruday, including funeral services for former Kingsland graduate and Kingsland School District Superintendent Gene Franklin.
The Kingsland All-School Reunion was started as a project of Kickstart Kingsland. While the original February date was selected to coincide with the Feb. 26 birthday of native son Johnny “J.R.” Cash, Crosby said they intend to keep that date since it is usually a time of year where there are not too many other things going on.
Kickstart Kingsland provided hot dogs, chili, nachos, sandwiches, desserts and drinks at no charge, though donations were accepted. She said they may continue that practice since the group collected $1,158 in donations at the reunion.
Crosby thanked the Mad Butcher at Fordyce for helping with the food, and she also acknowledged the work of the Kingsland Volunteer Fire Department in helping set up the auditorium.
