McWhorter Powers Lady Bears Past Junction City, 7-0

JUNCTION CITY - Lillie Faye McWhorter smashed a three-run homerun in the seventh inning as the Woodlawn Lady Bears scored all their runs over the final two frames in a 7-0 shutout of the Junction City Lady Dragons Tuesday afternoon at Junction City. The 8-2A conference game was a matchup between the league's top two teams heading into Tuesday's action. Woodlawn improved to 5-1 in conference play and 9-4 overall with the win. Junction City fell to 3-3 and 9-4. The game remained scoreless through the first five innings before the Lady Bears finally broke through in the top of the sixth. Freshman Jaci Hoyt opened the frame with a triple and then scored on an error off Kathyrn Dixon's grounder. One out later, McWhorter singled to score Dixon and McWhorter's courtesy runner, Karsyn Chastain, scored on Kaitlyn Webb's sacrifice fly, making it 3-0. Erin West led off the top of the seventh with a single and then scored on an error to extend Woodlawn's lead to 4-0. After Dixon and Anna Fitzgibbon delivered back-to-back singles with two out, McWhorter launched her three-run shot to essentially put the game out of reach for Junction City. The Lady Dragons had five hits in the game, and at times, put runners in scoring position. McWhorter, who pitched all seven innings for Woodlawn, turned them back each time. McWhorter scattered five hits while giving up three walks. She struck out 11. The Lady Bears had nine hits. McWhorter, Dixon and Fitzgibbon all had two hits apiece with McWhorter collecting four RBIs. Hoyt, West and Lily White also had hits.
