RISON - The Rison City Council approved an ordinance during its Oct. 4 meeting giving Mayor Charles Roberts the authority to apply for a grant to repave some streets in Rison.
The council unanimously approved two resolutions and an ordinance that gives Roberts permission to apply for a community development block grant through the state that would provide money to repave some of the streets leading to the Cleveland County Senior Citizens Center on Pecan Street.
Roberts told the council, and many of the members agreed, that the streets leading into the center are some of the worst in town. If awarded, the community block grant would provide funding to pave portions of Pecan Street connecting Rice Street by either First or Second Streets.
Also, Roberts informed the council that the city’s Facilities for Underdeveloped Neighborhoods (FUN) Parks Grant application is currently in committee awaiting a decision. The grant would be used to buy recreational equipment for Veterans Park.
The mayor said the city scored 27 of the 29 criteria needed for the grant during the initial review. However, he said a second look revealed the two criteria were actually in the grant application so Rison ended up scoring 29 of 29.
