Rison Approves Tree Ordinance; Update on Parks

RISON - The Rison City Council approved an ordinance Tuesday night that will give the city the right to trim back tree limbs that may be hanging over into the right-of-way to city streets. Meanwhile, Mayor Charles Roberts gave update on two city park grants - one that is about to be fulfilled and another that is in the application process. That business, and more, was addressed during the Rison City Council's regular monthly meeting Monday night. City Attorney Thomas Burns wrote an ordinance that will give the city the right to cut back any tree limbs that may extend over a city street. Roberts pointed out that, legally, the city's right-of-way along any of its streets extends from the ground and into the sky at each edge of the street. He said the tree limbs hanging over a street can be obstacles to ambulances, fire trucks and other first responders. In previous city council meetings, there had been discussion that a property owner was refusing to let the city trim some tree limbs that were hanging over the city right-of-way. There was previously no ordinance addressing such an issue on the city books. The Street Tree Ordinance was approved by a unanimous vote-Director of Public Utilities Joe Freyer will serve as the director for the street tree procedures. Park Grants Roberts informed the city council that the city is expecting delivery "any day now" of some new "sensory" playground equipment that will be installed at both Powell Park and Veterans Park.
