School Board Filing Period Opens Today

RISON - The filing period for candidates interested in running for the Zone 3 seat on the Cleveland County School Board and an at-large seat on the Woodlawn School Board opens today (Wednesday, Feb. 22) and closes next Wednesday, Feb. 1. The school election is May 2. Zone 3, currently held by Kelly Taylor of the Kingsland area, is the only zone within the Cleveland County School District that includes both sides of the Saline River. The zone includes roughly all of the county north of the Kingsland city limits and west of the Saline River. It also includes an area roughly between Hwy. 189 south of Kingsland to the Saline River. The zone does not include the City of Kingsland itself. Zone 3 is the first zone to be up for an individual election since redistricting took place after the 2020 census. All seven zones were up for election last year, and board members had to draw term lengths to stagger the terms for subsequent school elections. Taylor drew one year, which put Zone 3 up for election this year. The seat up for election on the Woodlawn School Board currently belongs to Aaron Tooke. During the school board's meeting earlier this month, Tooke announced he would be seeking reelection. All seats on the Woodlawn School Board are elected atlarge, which means any resident living within the boundaries of the school district can run for any seat on the school board. ...
