Woodlawn Approves Capacity Resolution For School Choice

WOODLAWN - The Woodlawn School Board approved the mandated School Choice Capacity Resolution during its meeting Monday night after the June 1 School Choice deadline netted the district 23 additional students.Local school boards are required to approve the School Choice Capacity Resolution each year in order to formally adopt capacity standards and grade-level quotas should a school district get more transfer requests than it can handle.By state law, districts can only deny a School Choice transfer application if the receiving school or specific grade level has a verified lack of capacity to accept more students. Those capacity levels include:•    When the receiving school district has reached at least 90 percent of its maximum authorized student population for a specific class, grade level or building.•    If the additional student would result in the district exceeding the district’s student-to-teacher ratio set by state or federal law, or state accreditation standards, thereby forcing the district to hire another teacher.Woodlawn Superintendent Dr. Kevin Hancock said the district received 24 students during the Jan. 1 to June 1 School Choice sign-up period while one student transferred out of the district.Response Team FundingHancock said the school board also approved $7,100 in incentive money for those staff members who volunteer to serve on the emergency response team. The Woodlawn School Board approved the formation a certified school security team in 2023. Both certified and classified personnel can volunteer to join the security team. Those who do must go through a background check and receive the special training to become a member.
