Woodlawn Board Acts On New Math Curriculum, Lunch Grant

WOODLAWN - A change in math curriculum, possible funding to provide free school lunches and a virtual option for homeschoolers in the district were among the topics addressed by the Woodlawn School Board during its regular monthly meeting Monday night.Woodlawn High School Principal T.J. Hill and Woodlawn Elementary Principal Zach Meyer both endorsed going with Imagine Learning to serve as a resource platform for math instruction, but have teachers take a more active role in the teaching process going forward.Hill said a lot of the curriculum platforms are computer driven, and he said they prefer having more “pencil-to-paper” instruction in the classroom. He noted that some teachers are relying too much on the curriculum to drive the instruction. Meyer, who is a former high school math teacher, said some of their previous math curriculum were very scripted, giving the teacher the responses they were supposed to say whenever certain questions came up. He said he recalled spending three hours at night trying to memorize the scripts to give the proper answers in class.Both said they preferred the new curriculum be used more as a  resource than a template that dictates every step in the classroom.The curriculum would cost the district $11,920 for five years, which includes both the workbooks and the license to use the program. Meyer pointed out that Imagine Learning cost about 90 percent less than other curriculum since much of it was paid for by grants. Hill also noted that the program allows teachers to send more practice questions home. After discussing the issue for several minutes, board member Larry Reynolds made a motion to approve the recommendation to go with Imagine Learning.
