WOODLAWN - The Woodlawn School Board will be hearing three "Requests for Qualifications" about developing facility plans for the district during its September meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, according to Superintendent Dr. Kevin Hancock.
Hancock said this is essentially the first step in the district possibly pursuing state partnership funding for two construction projects for the district: a new family and consumer science building with additional high school classrooms, and expanding of the school cafeteria.
Hancock said both projects have been included in the district's Facilities Master Plan, which are turned in to the state every other year. Those projects that fit the criteria for partnership funding must be included in the Master Plan to be considered for the program.
Partnership funding is a program administered by the Arkansas Division of Public School Academic Facilities & Transportation that pays a percentage of construction cost associated with a state-approved project. That percentage is based on a district's "wealth index." Hancock said Woodlawn qualifies to have about 70 percent of the cost paid by the state if the projects that are accepted into the program.
The program is funded by the state legislature, and is distributed on a competitive among those district's submitting requests.
Woodlawn's existing family and consumer science program is currently housed in a standalone building that Hancock said is the oldest on campus. The plan is to create a new family and consumer classroom along with additional classroom space in the high school.
In addition, he said he would like to expand the school cafeteria that currently serves students in kindergarten through 12th grades.
