DEWITT - Jude Roberts scored 32 points as the Woodlawn Bears used a hot start and a hot finish to put away the Class 3A DeWitt Dragons, 66-57, in the first round of the Cox Realty Classic held Monday night at DeWitt.Despite having Garrett Weatherford, one of the Bears’ top scorers, missing the game due to illness, Woodlawn jumped out to a 22-9 lead by the end of the first quarter.However, the Dragons began to creep back into the game. Roberts and Jack Lephiew, another starter for the Bears, both had to go to the bench after picking up their fourth foul of the game in the third quarter. Lephiew sat down with about 5 minutes left in the third while Roberts followed him with about 2 minutes left.DeWitt won the third by a 17-10 margin, pulling the Dragons to within 44-39 by the start of the fourth. The Bears, however, were able to regain control and close out the game with a 20-point period.Roberts was 7-of-11 at the free throw line in knocking down his 32 points. Jake Allred followed in scoring with 19 while Lephiew finished with nine.Woodlawn improved to 3-1 overall with the non-conferece win.
