Bears Turn Back Bee Branch; Drum Alpena in Second Half

WOODLAWN - Woodlawn saw a 14-point first half lead cut to just two before the Bears bounced back in the third quarter to come away with a 73-61 win over the Southside-Bee Branch Hornets last Friday night in the Woodlawn Gym.Bears Coach Logan Adair said the game was a last minute replacement game after Fordyce had to postpone its 8-2A conference game due to the football playoffs.Woodlawn seemed to be in control as the Bears bolted out to a 21-7 lead in the first half. However, the Hornets started to heat up from outside and were able to pull to within two in the third quarter.That’s about the same time the Bears found their offensive rhythm again. Five 3-pointers from Ryan Rutledge combined with an offensive outburst from Jude Roberts and Garrett Weatherford helped Woodlawn regain control and pull away. Adair said Roberts had a great feed to Weatherford for a momentum-building 3 that carried the Bears to the strong finish.Woodlawn had four players finish in double figures with Roberts leading the team with 26 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Weatherford had 21 points while Jake Allred had 18 and Rutledge 15.Woodlawn 74, Alpena 48MONTICELLO - Woodlawn held the Alpena Leopards to just 13 points in the second half as the Bears broke open a game tied at halftime for a 74-48 win Saturday in the “Mini State Tournament” held at Drew Central High School in Monticello.The Bears were up 18-11 at the end of the first quarter when Woodlawn Coach Logan Adair said he decided to pull all five starters in the second quarter. The Leopards took advantage and came back to tie the game, 35-35, at halftime.Woodlawn started pressing in the third quarter and pulled away from there, outscoring Alpena 39-13 in the second half.
