Lady Billies Use Big Inning to Beat Rison

MONTICELLO - An eight-run third inning broke the game open for the Monticello Lady Billies Monday afternoon as they handed the Rison Lady Wildcats a 17-4 loss in five innings in the season opener at Monticello.The Class 4A Lady Billies, who went 23-2 last year, built a 4-o lead with a couple of runs in both the first and second innings before the Lady ‘Cats came back with three runs in the top of third.Back-to-back singles by Elissa Summar and Layne Potter to lead off the third set up Riley Hyatt to deliver a two-run double to center. Then after the first out, Carlese Johnson dropped another double into center to drive in Hyatt, making it 4-3.But that was a close as it got as Monticello used two homeruns, two doubles and five singles to plate eight runs in the bottom of the third to extend its lead to 12-3.Rhagen Price scored Rison’s final run on a ground out bunt by Allie Bennett in the fourth.Johnson suffered the pitching loss for the Lady ‘Cats after going three innings inside the circle. Potter pitched the final inning before the run rule ended after five.Potter and Hyatt had two hits apiece while Johnson, Summar and Haven Simpson also had hits....
