CCSD Could Move $450,000 Surplus Into Building Fund

RISON - Should finances remain as they are, Superintendent Davy King said he may have to call a special meeting of the Cleveland County School Board by the end of the month to officially transfer about $450,000 in surplus from the general fund to the building fund Meanwhile, families within the Cleveland County School District now have an opportunity to access a curriculum through Virtual Arkansas that also allows their children to take part in clubs and other activities offered through Rison Elementary and Rison High School.Both issues were addressed during the Cleveland County School Board's regular monthly meeting Monday night.Under state law, a public school district is allowed to carry up to 20 percent of its current year net legal balance from one year to the next. Anything above that must be used by the district or moved out of the general fund. The state does allows districts to move the surplus from the general fund to the building fund, where it can be used for general fund purposes in the future if needed.After basically breaking even over the past few years, King said they will now be able to begin replenishing their building fund with what he expects could be as much as $450,000. He attributed the financial success to categorizing spending, utilizing what state and federal funding is available, and simply watching their spending."We needed that," King said about the boost to the building fund.King said he may have to call a special board meeting before the next regular meeting to officially approve transferring the funds.Option for Home Schoolers The board voted during its regular monthly meeting Monday night to join the Virtual Arkansas Home School program being offered through the Arkansas River Education Cooperative at Pine Bluff.King said the district benefits from the program since those students using it are included in the district's average daily enrollment.
