Vereen Likes Walker’s Performance In Rison’s Scrimmage at Monticello

MONTICELLO - Both teams scored on long touchdown passes in the first quarter but Monticello had one more than Rison as the Billies held on for a 14-7 victory over the Wildcats Tuesday night’s scrimmage at Hyatt Field in Monticello.All three touchdowns came within about the first eight minutes of the game as both defenses seemed to settle in after that. Neither team scored after the first three series of the game.The scrimmage consisted of two 12-minute quarters in the first half and a 10-minute quarter for the second half. There were no contested kicks.Monticello was facing 2rd-and-17 at its own 34 on the opening series of the scrimmage when senior quarterback Jackson Hines hooked up with Joseph Accelus for a 66-yard touchdown strike. The Billies tacked on the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 9:20 still left in the opening quarter.Rison answered with deep pass of its own when Kyson Walker found Bishop Butler behind the coverage for a 46-yard touchdown pass on 2Ild-and-i5 with 5:14 left in the first quarter. Dalton Matheson made the point after to tie the game, 7-7, to wrap up the nine-play, 80yard drive.On the Billies’ ensuing series, Rison’s Dalton Lee dropped a Billie running back for a twoyard loss on the first play, and a holding call on Monticello had the Billies facing 2nd-and-i7 when Hines hit Jayden Rhodes streaking down the sideline for a 77-yard score. The extra point made it 14-7 with 3:57 still left in the first quarter.Walker answered with a 56yard touchdown run for Rison on the third play of the following series, but the score was called back on a holding call against the Wildcats.
