CONWAY - Woodlawn rushed for 480 yards on 33 carries to average more than 15 yards per carry as the Bears overwhelmed the South Side-Bee Branch Hornets, 66-38, last Thursday night at Hendrix College in Conway.Quarterback Ethan Saeler and running back Griffin Manes accounted for much of that ground game, rushing for 218 and 206 yards, respectively. "When you've got guys like (Dakota) Campbell, (Aide) Powell and Owen Brown down there, just big kids moving bodies it's hard not to have a good game," said Woodlawn Coach Doug Means about his offensive line. "They're the guys that make it good."And then you've got three good backs in Griffin and Ace (Culliford) and Tayte (Jacks), and they do a good job of hitting the holes and everything," he said."And then overall, when you've got a guy like Saeler leading it all at quarterback, you can't leave him out of the mix because if you stop up the other (running backs) he's gonna hurt you," Means added.Going into the game, Means said he felt that his Bears may have a slight speed advantage over the Hornets based on the film he had seen. In reality, it turned out to be a little more pronounced. That speed advantage was evident on the opening kickoff when Manes returned the opening kick 83 yards for an apparent touchdown, only to have it wiped out by a holding call on the Bears. Taking over at the Woodlawn 28 after the penalty, Bears quarterback Ethan Saeler ripped off a 43-yard run and three plays later scored on a 19-yard burst. Jacks added the conversion run to make it 8-0 with 9:47 left in the opening period. That lead didn't last long, however, as South Side's Logan Jones, one of the Hornets' few seniors, broke free for a 51-yard touchdown run on South Side's second offensive snap. Jones bolted in for the conversion to tie it , 8-8, with 9:13 left in the first. It took just one play for the Bears to regain the lead. After the Hornets' onside attempt went out of bounds, Woo...
