Lady Bears Beat Magnet Cove To Win 8-2A Tournament Title

GURDON - Woodlawn had six hits go for extra bases, including two homeruns from Molly Shelby and one from Laci Rauls, as the Lady Bears throttled the Magnet Cove Lady Panthers, 10-1, in the 8-2A District Tournament championship game last Friday at Gurdon.The win gave the Lady Bears a sweep of both the regular season and district tournament championships. They will take the 8-2A’s no. 1 seed into the Class 2A Region 4 Tournament this week at Murfreesboro. Woodlawn, 22-5 overall,  will face the Spring Hill Lady Bears, the no. 4 seed from the 7-2A, at 3 p.m. Thursday at Murfreesboro. A victory sends the Lady Bears to the Class 2A State Tournament to be held next week at Palestine-Wheatley High School.Should the Lady Bears win, they will play the Dierks/Poyen winner at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the regional semifinals.While Woodlawn was cranking out 15 hits against Magnet Cove,Rauls was delivering another complete game victory from inside the circle. She held the Lady Panthers to two hits and three walks over seven innings while striking out eight.The long balls started early for top-seed Woodlawn as Rauls and Shelby launched back-to-back homeruns with two out in the bottom of the first to give the Lady Bears a quick 2-0 lead over second-seeded Magnet Cove.Woodlawn added to that lead in the second when Karsyn Chastain led off with a double before scoring on Anniston Wright’s one-out hit. Wright stole second and third before Maeley Simmons’ single drove her in to make it 4-0.Shelby stroked her second homer to start the third inning to make it 5-0 before the Lady Panthers scored their lone run on a single in the top of the fourth. The Lady Bears answered in the bottom of the fourth when a single by Simmons and a double by Jaci Hoyt led to two more runs.
