Bears Wrap Up 8-2A Championship on Clark’s Grand Slam

GURDON - Logan Clark hammered a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the 10-run rule as the Woodlawn Bears dominated the Junction City Dragons, 15-2, in the 8-2A District Tournament championship game Saturday at Gurdon.The win gave the Bears their sixth consecutive district title and the 38th in program history. They will take the 8-2A’s no. 1 seed into this week’s Class 2A Region 4 Tournament at Murfreesboro facing the Dierks Outlaws, the no. 4 seed from the 7-2A, at 3 p.m. Thursday in the first round.A victory Thursday assures the Bears a berth in the Class 2A State Tournament to be held next week at Palestine-Wheatley High School. If Woodlawn wins, they will face the winner between Spring Hill and Ouachita at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the second regional semifinal at Murfreesboro.The matchup between the Bears and Dragons for Saturday’s district tournament championship game turned out much different than their first encounter. Woodlawn saw a seven-run lead whittled to one as the Bears survived six errors to come away with a 9-8 win on March 31 at Junction City.The two teams went to to finish first and second in the regular season with 7-1 league records. Woodlawn earned the top seed by virtue of its head-to-head victory.While Woodlawn took the early lead at Junction City, the Dragons struck first this time, using an error and a single to score a run in the first. A solo homerun by Nemeiah Caldwell to start the second inning gave Junction City a 2-0 lead before Woodlawn Coach Tommy Richardson brought in Tyner Burris to relieve starting pitcher Tyler French.While the Dragons reached on an error against Burris and the next one a singled, he was able to get out the jam when he Bears threw out a runner trying to steal second, got a grounder for the second out and the Burris struck out the next batter to close out the frame without any more damage.Burris dominated the Dragons after that as Junction C...
