Grand Slam Powers Genoa Central Past Lady Wildcats, 11-1

BISMARCK - Genoa Central’s Brooklyn Cox belted a grand slam homerun in the bottom of the fourth as the Lady Dragons broke the game open for an 11-1 win over the Rison Lady Wildcats in the opening round of the Class 3A Region 4 Tournament at Bismarck last Thursday.The loss ends the season for the Lady ‘Cats, who close out the year with a 7-14 record.Rison, the no. 4 seed from the 8-3A conference, stayed within striking distance with Genoa Central over the first three innings. The Lady Dragons were  the top seed from the 7-3A.Cox gave the Lady Dragons an early 1-0 lead with a solo homerun in the bottom of the first, but Rison quickly tied it up. Mackenzie King drew a lead-off walk to start the top of the second for the Lady Wildcats before moving to second and third on ground outs by Elissa Summar and Haven Simpson. Claire Socia then delivered what would be the Rison’s only hit of the game, a double into left that scored King to make it 1-1.Genoa Central did not regain the lead until the bottom of the third when it converted a lead-off walk into a run to make it 2-1.The Lady Dragons then broke it open with six runs in the bottom of the four, all coming with two out. The first two scores came off back-to-back walks with the bases loaded, extending the lead to 4-1. Cox then followed with her four-run blast to make it 8-1.Genoa used three hits, two walks and a hit batter in the fifth to add three more runs to end the game on the 10-run rule.Neither team recorded an error in the game.Rison used three pitchers against the Lady Dragons. Shyanne Swaim got the start and gave up four hits and two walks with one strikeout over four innings. Raily Smith gave up three walks without a hit over two-thirds of an inning and Rhagen Price recorded the last out for the Lady ‘Cats after giving up four hits and two walks....
