WOODLAWN - The Woodlawn Bears will return to action after an off date last week to face the Parkers Chapel Trojans for a second time this season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Carl Jones Sports Complex This is scheduled to be the Bears’ final non-conference game before closing out the regular season with six consecutive South Conference games.
Woodlawn opened the season at Parkers Chapel on Sept. 2, and though falling behind early, rallied for a 42-28 victory.
That game is the only official game the Bears have played this season.
Woodlawn, after trailing 12-0 in the first quarter to North Conference power Brinkley, scored three unanswered touchdowns to take a 20-12 halftime lead on the Tigers. As the teams were preparing for the second half kickoff, lightning forced both teams from the field and the game was eventually called.
In order for the game to be declared an official contest, Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer said they would have had to play at least one play in the second half.
Parkers Chapel, which made the decision in July to go from 11-man to eight-man football, is off to an 0-4 start. The Trojans opened the season with a 38-22 loss at Spring Hill, a 42-28 loss at home to Woodlawn, a 34-4 loss at home to Spring Hill and a 68-30 setback at home last week to Mountain Pine.
In their first encounter, Meyer said the Bears went into the game not knowing what to expect since they did not have any video of the Trojans. Expecting to face a passing attack in the spread, Woodlawn was surprised to see Parkers Chapel come out in a power running set.
After the Trojans took an early lead, the Bears battled back to go up 22-16 at the half. Parkers Chapel tied it up with a touchdown in the third, and the game remained tied going into the fourth quarter when Woodlawn scored three touchdowns on its way to the 14-point victory.
