Woodlawn Gives Report to Public

WOODLAWN - Administrators within the Woodlawn School District presented the annual Report to the Public preceding the Woodlawn School Board meeting held Oct. 17 in the school cafeteria. Superintendent Dr. Kevin Hancock, High School Principal T.J. Hil, Elementary Principal Barbara Varnell and Gifted and Talented/Advanced Placement Coordinator Misty Davis gave presentations during the report. Here is a breakdown of each presentation: Superintendent Hancock focused his presentation on improvements that have been made to the school facilities over the past year and the district’s plans moving forward. Some of the improvements made over the past year included adding a complete camera system for security and tracing; new lighting for the baseball field; covered home bleachers at the softball field; safety rails were installed in the gym; corrections were made to the district’s septic system; and new ovens, refrigerator and generator were installed. Hancock said the district is currently in the process of replacing heating/air conditioning units on campus, installing an upgraded fire sprinkler system in the high school, replacing lockers in the gym, replacing buses and making technology upgrades across campus. Future facility plans include addressing the family and con‐sumer science (home econom‐ics) building, making improve‐ments to the athletic fieldhouse and preparing for student growth. Hancock also men‐tioned that security upgrades will be made across campus in the wake of the state legislature providing districts with addi‐tional money to make those up‐grades. Woodlawn High School Hill reported that the high school’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) rating had improved from the last year but was still below where it was at before the COVID pandemic.
