RISON - Battered and wounded but still fighting, the Rison Wildcats will seek the school's 17th undefeated regular season (including ties) and the outright 6-3A Conference title to add to a collection of over 30 league crowns, when they host the Drew Central Pirates for the annual homecoming game Friday night at George Walker Field of Champions. Kickoff time for the regular season finale is scheduled for 7 o'clock.
The Wildcats are 5-0 in the conference and 8-0 overall, while Drew Central is 2-3 and 54, which includes a forfeit from Lake Village in a league contest that the Beavers won on the field, 33-22. Rison remains a game ahead of Camden Harmony Grove in the conference standings, with the Hornets hosting Barton in their regular season finale. Rison has already secured a number one seed and a first round bye for the state playoffs that begin Nov. 11, but the 'Cats now want that undefeated regular season and outright league crown.
Even though 'limping and banged up,' Rison head coach Clay Totty had nothing but praise for the Wildcats after they overcame a multitude of adversity during a 29-16 win last Friday at Barton, where the 'Cats had to erase a deficit twice before getting the big victory.
'We had injuries, players vomiting on the field with some type of stomach bug, questionable officiating, lights going out, a good opponent, all sorts of things, but we had the fight to pull out a big win,' Totty said, commenting about the comefrom- behind victory at Barton. 'We had good senior leadership and we had some big time players make some big time plays. But now we have to move on.'
Totty said this week that at least four players would miss the Drew Central game due to injuries, including end/linebacker Thomas Wilson, broken arm; running back/defensive back Treyvione Wainwright and linepenalties man Braden Matthews, concussion protocol for each; and defensive back James Mitchell, ankle.
