Bears Knock Off Dragons in Key 8-2A Game

WOODLAWN - Freshman Jude Roberts had a break-out game as the Woodlawn Bears put themselves in position to finish second in the 8-2A conference standings with a 60-48 victory over the Junction City Dragons in a key league battle Monday night at the Carl Jones Sports Complex Gym. Roberts, who was elevated from the junior high to varsity team about two weeks ago, finished with a team-high 15 points as the Bears led by as many as 18 points with about two minutes left in the game. "It's our biggest win of the year, without a doubt," Woodlawn Coach Logan Adair said about the victory. Junction City came into the game in second place in the 8-2A standings behind Fordyce. The Dragons knocked off the Bears, 75-59, on Jan. 6 at Junction City. Woodlawn led most of the way, up 16-10 at the end of the opening frame and leading 24-20 by halftime. The Bears were able to extend that cushion to 35-28 by the start of the fourth quarter. Woodlawn finished its best period of the night, scoring 25 points in the fourth to lead by as many as 18. The Bears improved to 7-3 in conference play while the Dragons fell to 6-4. Roberts scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half while Jaxson Martin followed with 14, Raylon Lawson with 12 and Caleb Martin with seven. Adair said Lawson made some big plays down the stretch, getting some big momentum dunks off feeds from Landen Booth and making some big blocks on defense. Woodlawn 53, Gurdon 29 GURDON - Woodlawn took control with a dominate second quarter as the Bears blew by the Gurdon Go Devils, 53-29, in 8-2A conference action last Friday night at Gurdon. Woodlawn was up 9-8 at the end of the first quarter when the Bears went on a 14-0 run over the course of the second period and then extended that lead to 45-18 by the end of the third.
