RISON - In separate motions, the Cleveland County Quorum Court agreed to provide up to two trash cans to both residential and business customers during a special-called meeting by County Judge Jimmy Cummings last Thursday night at the Hall-Morgan Veterans Building in Rison.
The motions approved last week were made with the county agreeing to increase the monthly can-county payment to the county's new solid waste provider, Big Smith Waste Services, Inc. of Dumas, from 3,747 to 4,000. The company agreed to pick up as many as 4,200 cans at that rate.
Those requesting the additional trash can will have to submit a request in writing justifying why a second can is needed. For more information about requesting a second can, contact the county judge's office at (870) 325-6214 or the treasurer's office at (870) 325-6681.
The number of trash cans the county would issue to residents and businesses has been a major topic of discussion for the quorum court since the county entered into its new contract with Big Smith on Jan. 1.
Under the county's old contract with Get Rid of It, Inc., some customers were getting two cans and a few were getting even more than that.
Initially, Big Smith dropped off one trash can at each stop, which was in its contract with the county. However, Jaylan Smith of Big Smith told the quorum court during its regular monthly meeting on Feb. 6 that his company realized that there would be some stops that would have more than one can under that agreement.
Smith and Clark Litwiller, also of Big Smith, were at last Thursday's special meeting.
The subject of developing a policy about who could get a second can at no charge to came up during the January quorum court meeting.
