KINGSLAND - Updates on the installation of a new booster pump to improve water pressure and construction plans for the new Dollar General store were brought up during the Kingsland City Council's regular monthly meeting held last Thursday, Feb. 23, at Kingsland City Hall.
Mayor Sharon Crosby told the council that ICOR Construction LLC of Hampton informed her that the new pump that is designed to increase water pressure for customers along the Hwy. 189 area is expected to arrive in early May. Should it arrive as scheduled, she said the new pump could become functional sometime in mid June.
Crosby said the pump was not an off-the-shelf item and had to be specially built. She ICOR will soon begin preparing a slab at the junction of Hwy. 189 and Cross Road where the pump will be located.
In October, the Kingsland City Council approved a bid of $106,000 submitted by ICOR Construction to install the pump. The city is using about $60,000 left over from a grant used to refurbish the city's water tank and about $40,000 from the city's federal COVID relief money to pay for the project.
Water customers along the Hw. 189 North area have long complained of low water pressure. An investigation into the problem revealed the city's water tower was not elevated high enough to provide the proper pressure that is needed in that section of the city's water system. This new pump is supposed to address that issue.
Also during the meeting, Ronnie Taylor, who works with the city's street department, told the mayor and council that ground testing was conducted the previous week at the proposed site for the new Dollar General store proposed for the Hwy. 79/Hwy. 189 junction in Kingsland. Once those test results are back, Taylor said he was told construction could begin as early as this month.
