Lady Bears Score Late Run To Fend Off Lady' Cats, 1-0

RISON - Jaci Hoyt fly ball into centerfield scored the only run of the game as the Woodlawn Lady Bears edged the Rison Lady Wildcats, 1-0, in a defensive standoff Tuesday afternoon at Lady Bear Field in Woodlawn. Neither team was able to gartner much of a scoring threat through the first four innings until Woodlawn's Kaitlyn Webb singled to start the bottom of the fifth. Kendall Tooke then drew a walk and a bunt down third best allowed Erin West to reach to load the bases with no outs. Lily White then lined out to left for the Lady Bears' first out and Hoyt then followed with her fly to center that allowed Webb to score as the Lady Wildcats made a play at second for the second out. A ground out then ended the inning. Rison was unable to get a runner aboard in either the sixth or seventh inning, and Woodlawn held on for the 8-2A conference win. The game turned out to be a pitching duel between the Lady Bears' Lillie Faye McWhorter and the Lady Wildcats' Josey Edwards and Jade Keaton. McWhorter gave up just two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 14. Edwards pitched the first four innings for Rison, allowing one hit with no walks while striking out five. Keaton allowed two hits and two walks over the final two innings for the Lady 'Cats. Rison's two hits came on a two-out single by Rhagen Price in the first inning and a two-out single by Layne Potter in the third. The Lady Wildcats' best chance to scored came in the top of the fifth when Breanna Taylor to reached on an error to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amelia Stewart. However, McWhorter struck out the next two batters to turn back the threat. Woodlawn also put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth when Kathryn Dixon led off with a single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Anna Fitzgibbon.
