WOODLAWN - Erin West singled in the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the eighth as the Woodlawn Lady Bears finished up their 8-2A championship season with a 6-5 victory over the Junction City Lady Dragons last Friday at Woodlawn.
The Lady Bears ended the regular season with an 11-1 league mark and a 17-8 record overall. They will play the no. 4 seed Murfreesboro Lady Rattlers from the 7-2A conference at 10 a.m. this Thursday, May 4, in the first round of the Class 2A South Region Tournament being played a Horatio.
After finishing second in the 7-2A regular season standings, the Lady Rattlers dropped three of their last four games to finish fourth in the district tournament. They are 6-8 overall after going 4-2 in conference play.
Should Woodlawn win Thursday, it will advance to the South Region semifinals to play a noon Friday, May 5, and will automatically earn one of the region's four transfer spots to the Class 2A State Tournament to be played May 11-13 at Greenland.
Of the Lady Bears' eight losses, five have come by one run and one other by two runs. Woodlawn lost twice to Class 4A Bauxite, 8-6 and 6-5, while dropping a a 3-2 decision at Class 5A Valley View, a 2-1 loss to Class 3A Hackett and a 1-0 setback last week to Class 4A Monticello.
The Lady Bears' only conference loss was 1-0 at Parkers Chapel, which finished second in the conference.
The 8-2A conference finale last Friday offered plenty of anxious moments as Junction City scored two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to rally from a three-run deficit to tie the game, 5-5.
With each team getting a runner at second to start the extra inning, Woodlawn freshman Jaimie Simmons retired the Lady Dragons in order to leave the runner stranded.
